Albemarle County Parks and Recreation has asked CAMBC to spread the word:
Please do not ride, walk, or run off the (grassy) backside of the dam
at Walnut Creek Park. Please stay on the trail across the middle of the
dam and on established trails on either end of the dam.
Although it can be fun to ride off the steep, open back side of the dam to connect directly
to the trail that parallels the creek at its base, the down-side of many riders doing so is
damage to the grass covering of the earthen dam and higher risk of erosion of the dam
itself. The dam must pass local and state inspections annually --
ruts or damage to the
grass covering of the dam sides and spillway may result in the dam not passing
inspection. If the dam does not pass inspection, the trail crossing the dam and the trails
on the far side of the dam may be closed to cyclists and other trail users.
The County is also working on a plan that is compliant with state code to fix the mud and
ruts that now characterize the existing trail across the top of the dam.
If you are interested in building more fun trails at Walnut Creek and other county parks,
please check our
trailwork page
for our next trail work day or email
info@cambc.org for
how to get involved in upcoming trail building, maintenance, and design.
Thank you for your cooperation and for your help spreading the word! - CAMBC
