2006 News

(Trailwork pictorial!!!) On December 9, 2006, James Gist led a trailwork crew on O-Hill. They rock armored a 16-foot section of low-lying, often muddy trail. See the pictorial link above to see their work and learn more about rock armoring. Thanks go out to that crew for a really nice job!

Meeting notes from our October 24 meeting are now posted.

Daylight savings is over, ride when ya can!

December 2, 2006 will be our next trailwork day at Mint Springs, 10:00am-12:30pm. We'll be building a new section of trail to re-route around an unsustainable section, so we'll need lots of help to rack, bench, tamp, and finish. Bring your bike if you want to sample the trails after the work day. Directions to the park can be found here.

November 4, 2006 will be trailwork at Mint Springs, 10:00am-12:30pm. We're hoping for a big turnout as this is our first official work day at Mint Springs. So, come out and check out a local riding "secret". We'll be taking care of erosion issues, and checking out options for rerouting some sections that are unsustainable. Bring a lunch along, and we'll snack in the parking lot afterwards. Bring your bike if you want to sample the trails after lunch. Directions to the park can be found here.

October 24, 2006 is the CAMBC club meeting! at Anna's Pizza, 7:00pm. Come see the new CAMBC Banner and catch up on the CAMBC news.

Pictures from the 9/30 workday!

TAKMBD was a success! Thanks to our sponsors, C'ville Bike and Tri, Performance Bikes, Albemarle County, IMBA and Cliff, there were prizes for everyone! Tell them thanks if run into them. Pictures coming soon...

October 21, 2006 is the 4th Annual CAMBC Wild Ride! The Wild Ride is moving to a new location this year, come check out some premier trails in the George Washington National Forest! We'll also be partnering with SMBC and the 6-pack downhill series and camping out the night before! Check out the flyer for more details. Special Thanks to Marty for organizing the Wild Ride again this year!

TAKMBD POSTPONED: Due to bad weather, we are forced to postpone Take A Kid Mountain Biking Day. The postponement is for the safety of the kids and conservation of the trails (riding on wet trails is BAD for the trails!) The new date is Saturday, October 14, still at 2:00-4:30pm, still Walnut Creek Park, still lots of prizes and now extra time to register! There's still a few slots left!

October 7, 2006 is the 3rd Annual Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day! CAMBC is pleased to host our 3rd Annual Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day event which will be held on Saturday, October 7, 2006, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Walnut Creek Park. It will be held as part of IMBA's National Take A Kid Mountain Biking Day celebration. To sign up or volunteer to help, contact juniors@cambc.org.

Last year's event was a great success due to the great number of volunteers and sponsorship from Albemarle County and the local bike shops who are again supporting this event. Please come join us for a fun day of riding!

Sep. 30, 2006 is National Public Lands Day! Join the fun! CAMBC will be givin' a little Trailwork lovin' to Sherando's Torry and Kennedy ridges (Brushing with the new articulated hedger/brusher *mmmm*) followed by a bring-your-own lunch. Then even more fun! We'll shuttle to the top and ride down to enjoy the fruits of our labor! Meet at Bodo's (on 29N) at 8am, or the Coal Road parking area at 9am. If you've never been to Sherando, this is a great opportunity to come out and learn your way around or, if you're an old hand, come out to re-experience the fast, flowing Slacks rollercoaster. All skills and experience levels welcome! Please RSVP to Will so we can get enough tools and snacks for everyone.

Trailwork with SMBC on Dowell's draft, 10:00am. Dowell's draft is one of the best trails in the area. The sweet 7 miles of downhill needs some TLC in a few places. I think we'll be clearing blowdowns and trimming, but mainly doing treadwork (widening the benchcut.) Come on out, many hands will make the project go really quickly. Don't forget to bring your bike, as we're riding in to the trailwork area. Carpool from Bodo's on Emmet St. leaves 8:30am. See Matthew W.'s email in the announcements section for full details.

The next CAMBC club meeting will be Tuesday, August 8, 2006, 7 p.m. @ Anna's Pizza. Stop by and meet other club members and hear about exciting upcoming events.

CAMBC is pleased to announce the start of fast paced group rides organized by Shawn Tevendale. These are intended for riders looking for a fun, fast paced ride for an evening. (Don't expect to find a killer pace, just a solid one.)

We are going to try to hold two of these a month, most likely on Thursdays, but this may flex around as we figure out peoples' schedules so keep an eye on the email list or CAMBC website( www.cambc.org )for updates.

The first ride is going to be this Thursday, July 27th at 6:45 pm on our farm in the Earlysville area. This is the same place that the Brownie Crits are being held this year. If this is your first time on the farm, I will need to get you to sign a waiver on arrival as well.

Directions to Tevendale Farm: From Charlottesville take Earlysville Road past Whyte's Supermarket. At the Earlysville General Store, bear left onto Buck Mtn. Road. After Chestnut Grove Baptist Church, turn right onto Markwood Road. After about 1-1.5 Miles, turn left onto Allen Road. Pull into the first drive on the left. After you enter the driveway, there will be a small dirt path to the left. Pull in here and park.

Physical address for those that prefer Mapquest: 551 Allen Road Earlysville, Va. 22936. Protective gear mandatory (helmets, gloves, eye protection, etc). Questions day of ride: 434-964-1796 (Shawn) The Tevendale Farm is private property. Unless you are riding with the club when Shawn has invited us out to ride, then you are not permitted to ride these trails. If you are riding without permission from the Tevendale's you are trespassing. Please obey our host's generosity so we can continue to ride here in the future.

Virginia was announced as the best state in the US for mountain biking according to the annual IMBA Report Card released at the end of 2005. Your involvement in local clubs like ours is what makes VA such a great place for mountain biking. Read all about it here!

Following the April 2006 O'hill Meltdown, the UVA mountain bike club donated $300 to CAMBC for our support on trail work preparing for the event plus volunteering to help at the race. CAMBC says THANK YOU-both to the UVA mountain bike club and those CAMBC members who volunteered!!! The money will go toward trail tool maintenance and purchasing.
